The Licence to Operate a Slewing Mobile Crane (C6 - up to 60 tonne) course teaches you the practical skills and theoretical knowledge required to safely operate mid-range slewing cranes used across construction, mining, maintenance and industrial sites. During this course, you’ll learn how to conduct crane inspections, assess lift requirements, configure lifting equipment, follow load charts, manage risks, and operate the crane to lift, move and position loads safely and efficiently. You’ll also practise effective communication and signalling, along with emergency and shutdown procedures.
This nationally recognised qualification is perfect for operators wanting to broaden their capabilities and take on more complex crane tasks within a wide range of industries.

The Licence to Operate a Slewing Mobile Crane (C6) course builds on foundational crane skills and prepares you to operate larger, more complex slewing cranes up to 60 tonnes. This hands-on program teaches you advanced load handling, boom control, lift planning, and risk management required for medium-capacity crane operations.
By completing this course, you’ll be equipped to take on more demanding lifting roles across construction, mining, maintenance, and industrial environments. You’ll learn about:
Legislation & Compliance: Advanced WHS obligations, HRWL requirements, and industry standards for medium-capacity slewing cranes.
Crane Setup & Configuration: Selecting setup locations, deploying outriggers, configuring crane modes, and interpreting site conditions.
Detailed Pre-Operational Checks: Assessing boom systems, counterweights, slew bearings, rigging gear, and crane integrity.
Load Chart Analysis: Working with multi-configuration load charts, operating envelopes, and complex lift parameters.
Crane Operation: Operating slewing cranes safely - precision boom extension, slew coordination, hoisting, and safe load placement.
Complex Load Movement: Performing multi-directional lifts, dual-crane communication, and managing dynamic loads.
Post-Operational Procedures: Completing shutdown procedures, load gear inspections, and securing the crane for transport or storage.
Communication & Team Coordination: Working closely with riggers, doggers, supervisors, and spotters during complex lifting tasks.
Emergency Response: Managing failures, environmental risks, and unexpected load behaviours during operational tasks.
By the end of the course, you’ll be prepared to operate a 60-tonne slewing mobile crane safely and confidently while meeting all legislative and workplace safety requirements.
Due to the high-risk nature of crane operation, the Licence to Operate a Slewing Mobile Crane (C6) course is delivered face-to-face over five full days. You’ll gain hands-on experience in a controlled environment, building both confidence and competence while receiving direct guidance and personalised feedback from experienced trainers throughout the course.
After successfully completing this course, you can apply for your High Risk Work Licence (HRWL). You have 60 days from course completion to submit your application. HRWLs are valid for five years and can be applied for or renewed online via the WorkSafe QLD or WorkSafe WA websites. If your licence expires, you are no longer recognised as a licensed operator until it is renewed. WorkSafe provides a 12-month grace period for renewal; if this period passes, you will need to resit both the written and practical assessments.
If you are one of our corporate clients, we can apply for the licence on your behalf for an additional fee of $160 (which includes the WorkSafe fee).
This course is ideal for individuals who are:
Currently working as a CN or C2 operator and ready to progress into larger, more complex crane operations
Required to operate a slewing mobile crane up to 60 tonnes across construction, civil infrastructure, mining, or heavy industry
Looking to expand their lifting capacity and career opportunities toward higher crane classes (C1 and CO)
Seeking to formalise on-the-job crane experience with a nationally recognised High Risk Work Licence
If you’re aiming to take on bigger projects and more advanced lifting tasks, this course gives you the operational capability, compliance knowledge, and practical confidence needed to operate 60-tonne slewing cranes safely and effectively.
Completing the C6 Slewing Mobile Crane course prepares you for advanced lifting operations across construction, mining, industrial, and infrastructure projects:
Construction and Civil Works: Crane operator, site supervisor, project foreperson, rigging team member
Mining and Resources: High-risk work coordinator, plant operator, rigging supervisor
Facilities Management and Maintenance: Maintenance supervisor, access systems coordinator, facilities safety officer
Events and Entertainment: Senior stage rigger, crane signal operator, event infrastructure coordinator
By completing this course, you’ll be ready to take on larger lifts, coordinate teams safely, and progress toward high-capacity crane operations.
