The Licence to Perform Dogging and Basic Rigging combined course provides you with the skills and knowledge required to safely perform dogging and basic rigging work onsite. You'll develop practical skills in load movement, rigging, and signalling while understanding workplace hazards and control measures. You'll learn about:
Load Control & Rigging Techniques: Safely select, attach, move, and release loads using a range of slings, chains, lifting beams, and basic rigging equipment.
Rigging Set-Ups: Perform basic rigging tasks including the erection, movement, and dismantling of plant, structures, and equipment under supervision.
Signalling & Communication: Communicate effectively with crane operators and team members using approved hand signals, radios, and standard workplace communication methods.
Legislation & Compliance: Apply relevant WHS legislation, codes of practice, and workplace procedures for dogging and basic rigging operations.
Hazard Identification & Control: Identify, assess, and manage hazards associated with lifting operations, suspended loads, and rigging activities.
Risk Assessment & Lift Planning: Plan lifting and rigging activities, including load calculations, equipment selection, and implementation of control measures.
Equipment Inspection & Care: Inspect, maintain, and correctly store rigging gear, lifting devices, and associated equipment to ensure safe operation.
Emergency Procedures: Respond appropriately to incidents such as dropped loads, equipment failure, or unexpected load movement.
Workplace Reporting: Accurately report hazards, incidents, and equipment defects in line with workplace and site requirements.
By the end of the course, you’ll be confident in performing dogging operations and basic rigging tasks, managing loads correctly, handling equipment correctly, and applying safe work practices in compliance with workplace regulations.
Due to the high-risk nature of dogging and rigging work, the Licence to Perform Dogging and Basic Rigging course is delivered face-to-face. You’ll gain hands-on experience in a controlled environment, building both confidence and competence while receiving direct guidance and personalised feedback from experienced trainers throughout the course.
After successfully completing this course, you can apply for your High Risk Work Licence (HRWL). You have 60 days from course completion to submit your application. HRWLs are valid for five years and can be applied for or renewed online via the WorkSafe QLD or WorkSafe WA websites. If your licence expires, you are no longer recognised as a licensed operator until it is renewed. WorkSafe provides a 12-month grace period for renewal; if this period passes, you will need to resit both the written and practical assessments.
If you are one of our corporate clients, we can apply for the licence on your behalf for an additional fee of $160 (which includes the WorkSafe fee).

Eligible workers, employers and career seekers in Queensland’s building and construction industry can save up to 75-100% on courses, including short courses, units of competency, or Certificate and Diploma qualifications.
