The Load and Unload Plant course provides you with the practical skills needed to safely load, secure, transport, and unload plant and equipment in civil, construction, mining, and related industries.

You'll learn about:

  • Legislation & Compliance: Understand WHS responsibilities, workplace procedures, and legislative requirements relating to loading, transporting, and unloading plant.

  • Planning & Preparation: Learn how to assess the task, identify equipment requirements, inspect transport vehicles and trailers, and plan safe loading and unloading activities.

  • Hazard Identification: Identify and manage hazards associated with loading and unloading plant, including ground conditions, environmental factors, and surrounding personnel and equipment.

  • Plant Inspection & Preparation: Conduct pre-operational inspections to ensure plant is safe for loading, transport, and unloading, and identify any faults or defects.

  • Safe Loading & Unloading Procedures: Safely load and unload a range of plant using appropriate techniques, following workplace procedures and manufacturer requirements.

  • Load Restraint & Security: Apply correct load restraint methods, secure plant for transport, and ensure compliance with relevant load restraint standards and regulations.

  • Traffic Management & Safety Controls: Implement risk control measures, exclusion zones, communication protocols, and traffic management procedures to maintain a safe work environment.

  • Emergency Procedures: Respond appropriately to incidents, equipment faults, load shifts, or emergencies that may occur during loading, transport, or unloading activities.

  • Communication & Documentation: Communicate effectively with team members, use hand signals or other approved communication methods, and complete required workplace documentation and reporting.

This unit may support employment or workplace duties where workers are required to safely prepare, load, secure and unload plant using trailers or floats in site-based environments. Completion of this unit does not replace any separate licensing, driving, high-risk work, permit, site authorisation or employer competency requirements that may apply to the plant, vehicle, site or work activity.

Entry Requirements

There are no formal entry requirements listed for this unit. However, participants should have existing skills and knowledge in the type of plant being loaded or unloaded. This may include holding the relevant plant operator competency, or being assisted by a competent person who has plant-specific knowledge and experience. Students will need:

  • Basic computer skills and internet access for enrolment and pre-course information where required.

  • Adequate language, literacy and numeracy skills to read workplace procedures, follow safety instructions, communicate with others and complete assessment requirements.

  • The ability to complete basic calculations relating to equipment capacity, load weight and dimensions.

  • Participants must wear appropriate PPE for the training environment, including enclosed safety footwear, long pants, high-visibility clothing and any other PPE required by the training site.

  • Licensing, legislative, regulatory and certification requirements may vary between states, territories, industry sectors, worksites and plant types. Participants and employers should confirm any additional requirements before applying this unit in the workplace.

  • A valid Unique Student Identifier (USI) - mandatory for all nationally recognised training. If you don't already have a USI, you can apply for one online at www.usi.gov.au or we can apply for one for you.
