Licence to Operate a Standard Boiler - Course Information

The Licence to Operate a Standard Boiler (MSMBLIC001) course delivers comprehensive training in the safe, efficient, and compliant operation of standard boilers. These boilers may feature fixed or modulating combustion controls, fixed or modulated air supply systems, and operate using a single heat source. This includes single standalone units or multiple boilers operating as a battery, as well as systems using thermal or solar heat sources.

Throughout the course, you’ll develop the practical skills needed to operate and monitor boiler systems, maintain stable pressure and temperature levels, manage fuel and water supply, optimise boiler efficiency, and respond effectively to faults or emergency situations.

You’ll learn about:

  • Boiler Types & Components: Understand standard boiler types, main components, fuel systems, water supply systems, and safety devices.

  • Operations & Maintenance: Perform start-up, normal operation, shutdown procedures, routine maintenance, and operational checks.

  • Monitoring & Efficiency: Monitor boiler performance, identify abnormal conditions, and take corrective actions to maintain safe operating levels.

  • Hazard Identification & WHS Compliance: Recognise boiler-related hazards, implement risk control measures, and adhere to WHS and workplace safety requirements.

  • Water Quality Management: Understand water treatment principles, feedwater systems, and how water quality impacts boiler performance and safety.

  • Emergency Response: Respond effectively to boiler malfunctions, pressure issues, and emergency shut-down situations.

  • Communication & Documentation: Record operational data, report issues, and follow workplace procedures for safe boiler operation.

By the end of the course, you’ll be able to safely operate a standard boiler, perform routine inspections, and maintain compliance with WHS legislation and workplace requirements.

Course delivery and assessment

Due to the high-risk nature of boiler operation, the Licence to Operate a Standard Boiler course is delivered face-to-face over five full days. You’ll gain hands-on experience in a controlled environment, building both confidence and competence while receiving direct guidance and personalised feedback from experienced trainers throughout the course.
