The Licence to Operate an Advanced Boiler (MSMBLIC002) course provides the in-depth knowledge and practical experience required to safely operate advanced boilers and steam-generating systems. This includes boilers with fully automated controls, multiple fuel sources, superheaters, economisers, and complex auxiliary plant.
This nationally recognised qualification is ideal for workers in manufacturing, processing, energy production, mining, and heavy industrial environments where high-pressure and advanced boiler systems are used. By the end of the course, you’ll be confident in managing advanced boiler operations, performing high-level monitoring and diagnostic tasks, responding to abnormal conditions, and maintaining compliance with strict WHS and regulatory standards.

The Licence to Operate an Advanced Boiler - MSMBLIC002 course builds on the skills and knowledge gained from standard boiler operation and takes you further into the safe management of high-pressure, high-capacity, and technically complex boiler systems. Throughout the course, you’ll gain extensive hands-on experience with advanced plant equipment, including multi-fuel boilers, high-pressure steam systems, air preheaters, superheaters, economisers, and complex feedwater, air preheaters and combustion control systems.
You’ll learn how to monitor system performance, interpret advanced instrumentation, troubleshoot operational faults, and respond confidently to abnormal or emergency conditions. The course also covers efficiency optimisation, water treatment management, and compliance with stringent WHS and industry regulations, ensuring you are fully prepared to operate sophisticated boiler systems safely, reliably, and efficiently in industrial, energy, and processing environments.
You’ll learn about:
Advanced Boiler Types & Components: Understand high-pressure steam boilers, superheaters, economisers, multi-fuel boiler systems (gas, oil, solid fuel, biomass), complex combustion and feedwater systems, and multi-boiler batteries with auxiliary plant.
Operation, Control & Monitoring: Perform advanced start-up, operation, and shutdown procedures; manage high-pressure and high-temperature environments; interpret complex control systems and indicators; and optimise steam output and system efficiency.
Fault-Finding & Diagnostics: Identify abnormal boiler behaviour, troubleshoot feedwater and combustion issues, diagnose pressure fluctuations, and apply corrective actions in line with WHS and operational procedures.
Water Treatment & Efficiency: Manage boiler water quality to prevent corrosion, scaling, and carryover; monitor feedwater, condensate, and chemical dosing systems to maintain efficient and safe operation.
Safety, WHS & Emergency Response: Apply advanced WHS protocols and legislative requirements; respond to serious boiler incidents such as overpressure, feedwater loss, and system failures; and conduct safe emergency shutdown and isolation procedures.
By the end of the course, you’ll have the technical capability and confidence to operate sophisticated boiler systems safely and effectively in high-risk industrial environments.
Due to the high-risk nature of boiler operation, the Licence to Operate an Advanced Boiler course is delivered face-to-face over five full days. You’ll gain hands-on experience in a controlled environment, building both confidence and competence while receiving direct guidance and personalised feedback from experienced trainers throughout the course.
After successfully completing this course, you can apply for your High Risk Work Licence (HRWL). You have 60 days from course completion to submit your application. HRWLs are valid for five years and can be applied for or renewed online via the WorkSafe QLD or WorkSafe WA websites. If your licence expires, you are no longer recognised as a licensed operator until it is renewed. WorkSafe provides a 12-month grace period for renewal; if this period passes, you will need to resit both the written and practical assessments.
If you are one of our corporate clients, we can apply for the licence on your behalf for an additional fee of $160 (which includes the WorkSafe fee).
