Licence to Operate a Forklift Truck - Logbook Course - Course Information
Across two training days and supervised workplace practice, you’ll gain the knowledge, skills, and confidence to operate a forklift safely. This course is ideal for people starting out in forklift operations and businesses wanting to ensure their staff are properly trained and documented without immediately progressing to the High Risk Work Licence assessment. You’ll learn how to:
Apply workplace health and safety (WHS) requirements when operating a forklift.
Understand the responsibilities of both students and employers during supervised practice.
Operate a forklift under supervision and record workplace hours in your logbook.
Prepare for your final written and practical assessments after completing 40 hours of on-the-job experience.
By the end of the course, you’ll have the logbook, supervised hours, and foundational skills required to confidently take the next step toward your Forklift Licence.
Course delivery and assessment
The Forklift Logbook course is delivered over two (2) days. By the end of the course, you’ll be confident in your ability to operate a forklift safely, manage hazards, and comply with workplace safety standards.
Day 1: Formal training covering both theory and practical skills, which are recorded in your individual training plan and logbook.
Day 2: Work Health and Safety (WHS) assessment, provided you have completed the required logbook hours in the workplace.
During training, we’ll explain WHS requirements for logbook use and employer responsibilities. For example:
- Forklifts must always be operated under supervision.
-All workplace training must be logged and signed off by a licensed supervisor.
- After completing 40 hours of supervised workplace experience and once your supervisor is confident in your ability, you can book your final written and practical assessments with us.
High Risk Work Licences
Completing the Forklift logbook course alone does not qualify you for a forklift licence. To become licensed, you must successfully complete the final assessment, After successfully completing this course, you can apply for your High Risk Work Licence (HRWL). You have 60 days from course completion to submit your application. HRWLs are valid for five years and can be applied for or renewed online via the WorkSafe QLD or WorkSafe WA websites. If your licence expires, you are no longer recognised as a licensed operator until it is renewed. WorkSafe provides a 12-month grace period for renewal; if this period passes, you will need to resit both the written and practical assessments.
If you are one of our corporate clients, we can apply for the licence on your behalf for an additional fee of $160 (which includes the WorkSafe fee).

Entry requirements
You must satisfy each of the following criteria to enrol in this course:
You must be at least 16 years old*
Wear steel-capped or safety boots to your session and PPE.
Basic computer skills and internet access (for enrolment and communication).
Sufficient language, literacy, and numeracy (LLN) skills to complete assessments.
A valid Unique Student Identifier (USI) - mandatory for all nationally recognised training. If you don’t have one, you can apply at usi.gov.au or we can assist.
* While you can begin forklift logbook training before turning 18, you must be at least 18 years old to sit the final High Risk Work Licence assessment.

Eligible workers, employers and career seekers in Queensland’s building and construction industry can save up to 75-100% on courses, including short courses, units of competency, or Certificate and Diploma qualifications.
